I had a great opportunity to have a cup of coffee with a friend of mine this morning. He and I are in transitional points of our life…as many of you are. Scary isn’t it? I mean…how will we eat? How will we feed our kids? Am I going to die? Congratulations…you are right where the enemy (Satan) wants you. Because what he wants you to think is…God can’t handle this one…you can’t trust Him….He is out of miracles. And sadly…that is so easy to believe.
So during those times of life…who do you go to for advice? Do you have anybody? Or do you just log in to some website to ask a question…or maybe watch a talk show…for advice. If you are doing that, I can GUARANTEE you that you will get the “wrong” advice. Because they are just as stressed out as you are…but they are pretending to have answers.
So here is what you do…you find some godly men to talk to. Well, Dan…how do I know if they are godly men? Here is the answer…they will seek out to see what God says about the subject. Well, Dan…how will they do that? The answer is that they will open God’s book (the Bible) that He preserved for us. Think about all of the people who have ridiculed it…all of the people who have tried to wipe it out…all of the people who have tried to disprove it (and failed). Where are they today? They are either dead…or they are living, but lost. So what is God’s advice about worry…about my life? Okay big shot…give me an answer.
The answer lies in Matthew 6:25-34. I am sure that you have heard it…but please read it for yourself. The paraphrase is that Jesus says, look at the birds of the air, and the lilies of the field. God takes care of them…doesn’t He? And aren’t you more important than they are? And here is my favorite part of this, in verses 33/34 -”But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Wow…Jesus says…”don’t sweat it”…I got it! So if your friends aren’t seeking out God’s advice for you FROM His word that he has preserved for THOUSANDS of years….find some new friends….men of God…who want to build you up, and not scare you. Oh yeah…you might be wondering, “why won’t God just show me the way?” The answer is He will…if you ask Him. BUT…He won’t show you the whole path. Consider Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” You see, we can’t handle the whole path. Frankly, if God told me where He was going to put me, and told me something like…but to get you there, you will have to battle cancer, or you will have to go bankrupt…or you will lose someone close to you….I wouldn’t have the courage to get out of bed. So for the short term Lord…will you send me some godly guys…who are seeking you…to keep me on the path, and will you worry about tomorrow “for me?” Because you can handle it…I can’t.
