Is it a ‘What’ or a ‘Who’ that you’re leaning on?

Yesterday, I was driving down several of our country’s great interstate highways. My family and I were returning to DC after a wonderful time with friends and family in West Virginia. It was a great weekend (other than my West Virginia Mountaineers loss to Syracuse in football, my Philadelphia Phillies not making it to the World Series and my Philadelphia Eagles getting crushed by the Tennessee Titans).

As I drove along, for some reason the words of Proverbs 3:5-6 kept being repeated in my thoughts. Proverbs 3:5-6 states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.” The part of the verse that really grabbed my attention was “and lean not on your own understanding.” I have many things going on in my life right now, things that are certain and things that are completely beyond my control. I also have dear friends going through similar circumstances. Indeed it would be easy to respond to these happenings by:

1.) Trusting in my own knowledge and ‘calculated’ plans (which all too often fall apart…hence why I refer to myself as ‘Chuck – the Big, Dumb Animal’)

2.) Flying completely off the handle and sinking into anger, worry, doubt and fear of the unknown

So today I thought to myself, “Is it a ‘What’ that I’m leaning on or a ‘Who’ that I’m leaning on?” If I lean on the ‘What’ (MY knowledge, MY plans, etc.) I just set myself up for failure because I know that I am fallible (just ask my wife and if you’re perfect then you need not read on!). The ‘What’ doesn’t spur me on during these times. The ‘What’ doesn’t comfort me when the road is hard and unknown. This can only be done by a ‘Who’ (a person) and that person is Jesus Christ. He makes it clear in the writings of the prophet Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) HE has the plan, HE wants to prosper me and not harm me and HE has a hope and a future for us all! So take some time out to think, “Is it a ‘What’ or a ‘Who’ that you’re leaning on?” May the words of this old hymn encourage you to lean on Jesus!

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
(Words by: Elisha A. Hoffman…Music by: Anthony J. Showalter)

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Refrain
Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Refrain

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Refrain

PRESS ON! (Philippians 3:14)

    I find it to be so easy for me to easily ‘click’ or ‘snap’ into option 1 or 2 – even when I know where those options take me.

    I definitely hear you brother.
