This is probably the most paralyzing question in the world. It will keep more people on the sidelines than any question that I have ever heard. If we just sit around “seeking” out God’s will for our life…we are never actually doing it. In other words…we make it so hard that we never actually do anything. Well…what is really happening is that we are allowing Satan to paralyze us…because if we aren’t in the game…”he” doesn’t have to worry about us. By the way…he HATES it when you are doing God’s will…and living according to God’s plan.
BUT…you have to know that God can’t tell you the whole plan…you can’t handle the truth…to steal a Jack Nicholson line…let me tell you about a wonderful person…
Joni Eareckson Tada (joniandfriends.org) is one of my personal heroes. The basics of the story is that she asked God for her to get closer to Him. Well shortly after that…at age 17 she dove in the water, and the bottom line is that she broke her neck, and is a paraplegic. She has been in a wheelchair for 44 years. BUT…because of her injury, she has touched the lives of tens of millions of people that she would not have if she hadn’t had her accident. AND…she has grown SO close to God because she can do very little on her own. With the exception of that fact that she is a wonderful author, an exquisite painter (yes…with her teeth), and a beautiful singer…. She travels the world, has founded “Wheelchairs for the World” which custom fits used wheelchairs for those who can’t afford them. She has done more for people with disabilities than ANY person in the world that I can think of…and she has been a HUGE blessing for Wounded Warriors.
But can you imagine if God told her the plan? If I were her…I would have said, no thanks…do you have another idea? But not Joni! Every morning she wakes up and God guides her path. Wow!!
So while you “may or may not” have a path like Joni’s…it is easy to find God’s will for your life.
John MacArthur (http://www.gty.org/), puts it this way…I think that he is right on the money. If you are in the Word, and if you are speaking to God in prayer frequently…then God’s will for your life is….whatever you want to do. That makes perfect sense. If you are spending time with God…you are already there!!!! So go for it…you have already developed a heart for God and you are already in an intimate relationship with Him.
Consider Isaiah 55:6-11 – “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
So be encouraged….if you spend time with God…He will spend time with you. He will be delighted…and you will be in His will…and let’s face it…where else would you want to be?
Grace and Peace, Dan
