Let’s face it….some days you just don’t feel like being encouraged…or encouraging anybody else. But back to the genesis of this entire 365 days of encouragement…that is the time that you find 3 people to encourage.
My Hero Hannah gave me the substance for me today to be able to do that. I am dealing with something that I don’t really want to deal with…and she provided me with a wonderful note to remind me that being encouraged is a two way street. Just like we have the opportunity to give…we need to RECEIVE with joy and thanks. Sometimes it is just hard to receive. I think it must be a guilt trip of a) we don’t deserve it, and b) it is going to cost us something in the long run.
It reminds me of the story in Matthew 10:5-8 – These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions:“Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
Frankly, I think the disciples said…huh? I bet they were sort of looking over there shoulder…saying,”uh, Jesus…how are supposed to do this?” We aren’t equipped…especially the whole driving out demons thing.
But Jesus said go…and they went.
That is the same thing that we are supposed to do. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 makes it pretty clear, “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.”
So be encouraged…you don’t have to wonder if it is optional or not. It is just what we are supposed to do. And when you find others to encourage…you will be blessed!
Thanks Hannah for reminding me! That is why you continue to be my hero!
Grace and Peace, Dan
