Will God yell at me if I mess up? The short answer is no. But here is the longer one.
Think about God. If He gives you something to do…He owes you all of the resources for whatever that “something” is to be wildly successful. BUT…remember, that doesn’t mean that it will happen like you think it “should.” I think that is my biggest problem…I think that God would do things the way that I would, and frankly, I am glad that He doesn’t…because I normally mess it up.
But back to the original question…let me tell you how God deals with His men who are on His mission…it is really…really cool. The story takes place in the days of King Ahab and Elijah. I will give you the abbreviated version…but the full story is from 1 Kings 16:28 – 1 Kings 19:8. Before you say…yikes, that is a lot of reading…it is a story of the power of God given to men who are on a mission…His mission.
Remember this is the abridged version. Ahab was a really bad King…evil in the sight of God. Elijah was a prophet…he spoke directly for God. So in response to Ahab’s evilness, Elijah asks God to stop the rain until he, Elijah says for it to rain again…and that is exactly what God does. Now that is power! THREE years with no rain…not much gardening going on there my friend.
So God provides for Elijah during that time frame and King Ahab and his really bad wife Jezebel hate Elijah. So in 1 Kings 18 Elijah tells Ahab that “his” wickedness is the reason that all of this is happening…it is God’s judgement. Elijah challenges Ahab’s god, Baal, to a test. 450 prophets of Baal versus Elijah. Those are excellent odds! But in God’s favor…read on. They both set up a sacrifice, and Baal’s prophets are doing all sorts of stuff…cutting themselves, leaping, crying….no response. Then Elijah says , “watch this.”
In 1 Kings 18:37-38 - Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that You, O LORD, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again.” Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
Oh yeah…then after that, Elijah takes the 450 prophets of Baal and kills them by the river. Then Elijah prays for God to send the rain again….and God does. So all in all, that is a pretty good days work.
But THIS is how cool God is. Chapter 19:1-8 – 1 Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 3 And he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough; now, O LORD, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.” 5 He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.” 6 Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.
Here is the encouragement. Elijah wanted to quit…and die for that matter. And in verses 5-8 God shows how He takes care of His guys. He basically said…shhh Elijah….get some sleep and rest. It is okay. You did good…but you are just a little scared. Now wake up and eat something that I will give you…and have something to drink. Now get some more rest….shhh…it is okay Elijah. Now wake up Elijah, and let Me feed you one more time…because you have some things that I want you to do. Get back in the game…and get going…you’ll be fine, and I will be right there with you.
How cool is that??? I ALWAYS want to quit. And God basically says…”Dan, it is not up to you to say when you quit…or when you die…that is My call…not yours.” But I will be right there with you every step of the way. Hang in there buddy…you are doing good.
We might not like it, we might be tired…but God is telling us…”hang in there.” So be encouraged my friend…if you are putting God first…He is right there with you.
If you still don’t think so…shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will talk. I would enjoy the opportunity to encourage you. Because by encouraging you…I am encouraged. That is what this site is all about.
Grace and peace, Dan
