When you want to do good…sadly, we sometimes need an inspiration. There is so much junk that we waste our time with it is no wonder that we seldom really do anything that is substantial. I saw the front page of the Washington Post this morning, and the article was about Capitals fans lamenting an overtime loss. Don’t get me wrong…I enjoy sports…but who really cares whether they win or lose. What does that do for anybody except to let you brag about your team…or give you an opportunity to go out and celebrate…which I think requires you to get drunk, and then set things on fire…or that is the way that it seems.Or you could meet somebody like Betty…now SHE is inspirational. She and her husband bought 62 acres back in 1967, and dumped everything that she has ever had…money, time, and talents…to do one thing….minister to people who nobody else wants. They called the place Emmaus (http://www.villageofemmaus.org/index.html), and they have been taking in troubled women, unwed mothers, folks without homes….for 42 YEARS!!!! By the way, they did that in the bible belt where unwed mothers were shunned.
Well now it is time for people to give back to her. Due to her having had to take care of her wonderful husband who had a debilitating stroke 10 years ago yesterday, her mother who lived to be 100, and her brother who had downs syndrome….well let’s just say that Emmaus needs some resources…to get back in shape. By the way, she continued to take in folks during the entire time that she was caring for so many others.
And NOW…she wants two things from God: A few more healthy years so that she might minister to Veterans who are hurt from the way…whether it is visible or invisible wounds. And the opportunity to see some of the vision that God put on her come to fruition.
Her compassion and Christ-like love is so impressive that I have asked her to take the lead on the project to restore Emmaus. And the great thing is that so far the folks that we have on the team are God, Betty, and Me (and I am the weak part of the team). So I guess we don’t need anything else…because God is going to have to do everything…because this is humanly impossible. I wrote this sentence, so that when you see how amazing Emmaus has been blessed, you can know for sure that GOD gets all of the glory!
God woke me up at 3:30 this morning with 3 things:
1. Where are the men?
2. Proverbs 3: 27 – Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in your power to do it.
3. And lastly…the words…”I WILL RESTORE EVERYTHING!”
I have some work to do…but until next time…
Grace and Peace, Dan
