Eliminate the “I” and Accentuate the “I AM”

During my morning drive into work I am fortunate to be able to prepare for the day by listening to the teaching of learned brothers in Christ. This morning I had the privilege to hear the Lord speak profoundly through Pastor Derek Grier (of Grace Church in Dumfries, VA) and the late great Pastor J. Vernon McGee of ‘Thru the Bible’ Radio Ministries. Both of my learned brothers focused on the absolute need to take the focus off of “I.” Personally, I really needed this lesson because I have deep down been wrestling with over focusing on “I” lately. Here’s why (and I alluded to me and my family’s crazy year in a previous BLOG)…in late 2011 I was part of a reduction in force (RIF) conducted by the US Air Force. A RIF means that the military (in my case the Air Force) no longer needs you. However, in my case I had served almost 16 years and was 4 years shy of receiving a pension and all the associated benefits. Due to the RIF, the Air Force did not offer me an early retirement, etc. I know what all of you are saying right now, “Ouch Chuck! You served in the military for almost 16 years during the longest period of warfare endured by this nation and the Air Force did this?” My answer is “Yep!”

So last night my beloved wife and I are sitting on the couch, scrutinizing the medical care packages offered by the current civilian company I am blessed to work for. For those who are still in the military you will see that civilian medical care/coverage is QUITE expensive…gobbling up a big chunk of your paycheck. So we are sitting there and I start thinking, “How am I going to pay for this?” “How am I going to do this?” “How am I going to take care of my family?” Notice the wording here…a whole lotta “I’s!” My beloved wife interjects into my thoughts and brings up points that she has been learning in her Bible study. She says, “You know Chuck, Christ didn’t come to the world to buy a house, to have a retirement, etc. He gave up all that He had to serve and to do what His Father wanted Him to do.” So it hit me this morning…the evil one and the world is consumed with and wants us to solely focus on “I”. But Jesus tells us that the true focus should be on “I AM…” Our Heavenly Father says to us, “I AM the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27) Follow along with me now…”I” equates to one (just me)…but “I AM” equates to Father, Son, Holy Spirit (the Trinity)…ever watchful over me…” For I AM the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” (Isaiah 41:13)

I know what some of you may be saying, “Chuck, that’s all ‘touchy feely’, your just building up false hope to get you through the day.” To that I say, “Absolutely not.” Because my HOPE rests in “being sure of what I (we) hope for and certain of what I (we) do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1)

No folks, just look at the verses I listed above out of Scripture. My HOPE “rests” in the assurance (the guarantee, the pledge!) of a PERSON…who is the ONLY one that can ultimately say to all of us regarding our lives and everything in them, “I’VE GOT THIS!” And to that I say to the Great I AM, “THANK YOU!”

Press On! (Philippians 3:14)
