It is amazing that we live in a sea of people, yet the number one thing that we suffer is loneliness. In fact I would venture to say that the more popular you are…the more lonely you are. Because popularity and power bring with it a host of people who “want something from you”…or are just around you because you are the person to be associated with. That my friend…is emptiness…and if that is what you seek…you will get it. Consider this quote from Albert Einstein.
“It is strange to be known so universally and yet to be so lonely.” Albert Einstein.
But loneliness is not just a worldly concept…it affects all of us. As a note of encouragement…if you are lonely…if you are depressed…then you are probably in the largest group of people in the world. And don’t think that because you are a Christian that you are immune to that…just check out those great men of God who said…I am dying here…
Elijah: 1 Kings 19:4 – But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough; now, O LORD, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”
Jeremiah: Jeremiah 20:14 – Cursed be the day when I was born; Let the day not be blessed when my mother bore me!
David: Psalm 6:3 – And my soul is greatly dismayed; But You, O LORD– how long?
Charles Spurgeon – “The tongue of the taught belongs only to those who also are men of sorrows and acquainted with grief.”
So you are not alone…you are not without company in confusion, fatigue, loneliness…or depression. But Spurgeon has another quote that is really great. “The refiner is never far from the mouth of the furnace when the gold is in that fire, and the Son of God is always walking in the midst of the flames when His holy children are cast into them.” Spurgeon.
Be encouraged with that! God sees gold in you…and knows that gold is only purified with His refining fire. But He is with you and will always be with you. He just wants you to hang in there…listen to how David talks about his time of trial…and deliverance on the other side.
Psalm 40:1-3 – 1 I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.
Oh yeah…the best encouragement comes from God Himself…
Hebrews 13:5 – Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Need I say anymore?
Grace and Peace, Dan
