I was reading in Chronicles this morning, and although we think about the Old Testament as…well…old…it is rich with promises and shows some amazing insights about the way that God deals with His people. And when you look at the kings of Israel, God classifies them this way…they were either a “good king” or an “evil king”. That is a pretty easy scale. Because God looks at people’s hearts…and He still does.
This morning was king Asa. He was a good king, and he got rid of all of the evil things that the people were worshipping “instead” of God…which makes God quite happy. And anytime that is done in the bible…God rewards them. It is the same today! IF we will get rid of the junk that distracts us from God…money, power, vacation homes, club memberships…those idols that distract us from God, I think that He will bless us in ways that we can’t imagine. Now don’t get me wrong, and don’t send me emails about golf and vacations, etc. God provided them for us…but He doesn’t want us to worship them…or to worship pleasure. He wants us to worship Him! Jesus puts it this way…
Matthew 6:24 – “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. (NIV)
By the way…if you don’t think that we “serve” these things. Consider why you have to work so hard…or two jobs…or 7 days a week. Probably to pay for those things that we have…but don’t “need.” Just an aside…but by the way…don’t think this is a new concept. If you don’t think the next verse is true…tell the bank you won’t be paying your mortgage for a while and see how happy they are with you.
Proverbs 22:7 – The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower becomes the lender’s slave. (NASB)
So Asa gets a warning or a reminder from the Prophet Azariah…and here it is…
2 Chronicles 15:2 – … “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. (NIV)
Actually…if you want to see how often this theme comes up…search for “Seek the Lord”, or things like that. It is the prevailing theme of the Bible! Because GODS WANTS YOU TO SEEK HIM! He wants you to find Him….because He loves you, and wants to spend time with you. Don’t let the pressures and distractions of this world keep you away from Him. Be a “good king” and do what God desires of you….and that is to put everything on Him.
Be encouraged…that same promise that was given to Asa is given to you! If you seek Him, He will let you find Him! Now quit wasting time….and do it!
Grace and Peace, Dan
