Do you ever have those times where you just feel like….nothing. Where you feel….distant. Where you have….no horizons. Where you feel….abandoned. I know how you feel. That is where I am right now….still in the slough of despond.
Because…when you have been in the game for God, and you have had an opportunity to serve Him….not work to please Him…but serve Him…you miss it when you don’t have it, and you are wondering…what is going on? I mean I have been in the most powerful position that I have ever been in…and that is a place of acceptance of total dependence on God…and then He took it away from me? All of it? How come…was I not ready? Was I too arrogant? Are you moving me to something bigger? Come on God…I am dying here!!!
Thankfully, we have a God that we can yell at. Don’t take that the wrong way….I said yell at…not blame. We have a God that we can remind Him about the promises that He made to us. And He listens. Don’t think so? Lets ask Moses?
Moses was in the desert with a couple of million of his favorite Israelite friends…and well…no horizons. And lets face it…he probably wasn’t having a great day. I mean, Moses was the MAN!! He just came on the scene did some pretty impressive stuff in front of the most powerful man in the world….and then took a couple of million folks out for a walk in the desert. Now that is “in God’s game!” Talking about depending on God!!! And then…flat as a pancake. And here is how he reminds God.
Exodus 33:12-14 – 12Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
14The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (NIV)
My paraphrase…”don’t forget God…YOU were the one who picked these people…not me. YOU were the one who asked me to lead YOUR people out of bondage. YOU were the one who told me that YOU would take care of us…WELL…don’t forget about us…we don’t have a lot of options here if YOU abandon us.
Moses was a MAN…he was scared…he was doubting…he wanted to do what God wanted…but today he wasn’t getting it. I know how you feel Moses (at least on a much smaller scale). What a great God we serve that shows us that NO ONE is immune to days of being flat as a pancake.
I think that God likes it when we yell at Him…for a couple of reasons.
- AT LEAST WE ARE YELLING AT SOMEONE WHO CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
- And that means that we are seeking His face and studying His promises to us.
- AND…that means that we are relying on Him.
Romans 8:28 is a very powerful verse…a little unbelievable really when you are flat as a pancake with no horizons…and bored out of your gourd waiting for God to put you back in the game (that is me yelling a little). But verse 29 is really what ties it all together. And then verse 30 reminds us that HE took care of us. And then verse 31 reminds us that He is on our side…so how can we get in a better position than that? And verse 32 reasons with us to remind us why it makes sense
Romans 8:28-31 - 28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. 31What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (NIV)
So be encouraged…when God puts it that way…I guess it makes sense. That doesn’t mean that it is easy…but it does mean that it makes sense. But don’t wait too long Lord…please? Remember your promises to me?
Grace and Peace, Dan
