Don’t you really feel like God has gone overboard sometimes….I mean, all of the rules and stuff? Why doesn’t He just let me do what I want? What a cosmic kill joy….I mean drugs, and booze, and chasing women/men, and gambling, and cheating, and stealing, and living it up in a land of no consequences is fun! Until the money runs out….and until the disease hits you…and until your friends have run away…and until your marriage is shattered. Then all of that stuff is not so much fun. BUT…when you look at TV, or the internet, or listen to your friends who laugh at dirty jokes, and encourage you to do whatever makes you happy….you realize that is the counsel of the world!
Can you imagine a world with no street signs? Where you drive into DC, and your advise is drive whichever way you want to…as long as you are happy. Or a world that doesn’t put poison stickers on things that will kill you, and just advises you to try it, you may like it….or it may kill you. Or can you imagine you watching your kids go down a path that is going to ruin their lives….and you just saying, go ahead, if it makes you happy. NO!!!
We hold God to one standard and we do the opposite. We scream, beg, cajole our kids not to cross the street without looking, or without an adult. We put all sorts of protection on the medicine cabinet, and the cleaning supplies so our kids don’t get in to them. We mapquest, buy GPS’s, ask friends for directions so we know exactly how to get somewhere so we don’t get lost.
Well friends…that is the same thing that God does for you. I ran across a site for “skeptics” about religion…whatever that means. And it is incredibly detailed about how absurd, intolerant, ridiculous, and cruel God is. In fact, they almost annotated the entire bible to ridicule it. It is called the Skeptics Annotated Bible in case you are interested. Amazing that they would take so much time to cut down something that they don’t even believe in. Can you imagine if they would take the time to actually read and understand how God is protecting us and loving us?
Isaiah 1:18-19 – 16“Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil, 17learn to do good; seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.
“Let Us Reason”
18“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool. 19“If you consent and obey, you will eat the best of the land; 20“But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” truly, the mouth of the LORD has spoken. (NASB)
Be encouraged….God is “just.” And that needs to be our encouragement, because we really can’t get our minds around that word. We desire for justice for “us”….God understands justice for the world. Now if that doesn’t blow you mind…I don’t know what will. But God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent….and time has no meaning to Him, because He doesn’t operate in time.
Isaiah 55:8-9 – 8“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. 9“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.(NASB)
Now all of that would freak me out….and scare me somewhat….unless God told me this as well…
Jeremiah 29:11 – 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(NIV)
Now that is encouraging….He knows what is good and bad for me. He knows the paths of my life. Whew….I am glad that somebody does…..because I prove to myself over and over again…that I don’t.
Grace and Peace, Dan
