I watched Greg Laurie’s TV show last weekend, and it was riveting. AND…it just goes to show you the sin…or the potential for sin escapes no house. If you don’t know who Greg Laurie is….look him up (http://www.harvest.org/)….you will not be disappointed.
I first heard him in at a “Harvest Crusade” in Hawaii…and we walked forward as a family to make a commitment for Christ…sort of. Actually we just walked forward because our son just popped up and went forward…and even though we weren’t really comitted….it was at least a seed that God planted.
But back to Greg. He was a California surfer guy who grew up in a dysfunctional household…multiple divorces….and of course he was smoking dope and all of that. Well then God gets a hold of his life…and he becomes this great preacher and has all of these great crusades to bring a bunch of folks to Christ….life is good right? No problems after that….not so fast….
Later, when he becomes a dad, his sons…you guessed it…get in to smoking dope, drinking, pornography….the whole sin scene. But…through the grace of God…they both came back to Christ. They were the prodigal sons like you read about it. Just like me….and probably many of you.
So be encouraged….God is much bigger than your messed up life and your messed up kids. Many of us…in fact all of us in one respect or another are prodigals….you all have heard the story about the Jewish boy who wanted his father’s money. He gets it, and goes to another country and blows it all until he is broke and friendless….amazing how few friends that you have when you have no money. But if you only know that part of the story…you have missed it. Here is the cool part…
Luke 15:20 – So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.(NIV)
PAY ATTENTION….we have no idea how long this son was gone…BUT HIS FATHER WAS LOOKING FOR HIM…ALL THE TIME. Just like us. When we are rebelling, and blowing it….God is waiting for us to return. But most of you don’t know this part of it. The son had committed a big time faux paus….he had taken wealth from the village. In those days, wealth meant prestige and power. So the villagers would have been well within their rights to kill him “if” he returned….so the father ran to protect his son so that no “harm” could come to him. He was safe when he was under his father’s protection. Now THAT…is encouraging….and just plain awesome!
By the way….God is looking for you as well. God wants you to come home as well. And there will be warm arms to embrace you. Not a guilt trip about how you blew it…or a stiff arm saying that you need to earn my love….nope…just a big old, warm, strong hug. One of safety…and one of acceptance.
Now don’t think there is no consequence for sin….I can ASSURE you that there is….but God is bigger than that as well.
Grace and Peace, Dan
