We are such an instantaneous society that waiting seems like an archaic concept. Some friends of mine are going to meet together the night before the election to pray for the election…and I thought to myself….how rude to tell God to intervene at the last minute. We should be crying out to God at all times for our elected officials….in fact, we are commanded to…
1 Timothy 2:1-2 – I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. (NIV)
And…it goes much deeper than that. When we pray…we are making our petition to God. Well…He doesn’t just snap His fingers and make it happen….He could….but normally He doesn’t. Because when you pray….there are a LOT of other people that are part of God’s answer. So we sometimes have to wait….and wait….and let’s face it, if we wait more than a few days, we cry out…GOD, where are You? Don’t you realize how critical my situation is? And then…more silence.
Why, because when we wait on God….we find out things about our self. If we are smart…we pour over the scriptures to see if God is teaching us. Let’s see what God says about waiting on the Lord…
- 2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (ESV)
- James 5:7-8 – Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. (ESV)
- Isaiah 40:31 – But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (ESV)
So be encouraged…all of those promises sound really good to me. AND…I know that if I go in to a situation….with me as the lead….I am guaranteed that God will just sigh and say…oh well…if you want it that way…but my way was so much better….
Grace and Peace, Dan
