Do you ever thank God for Storms?

Day 262

The Northeast is in the recovery mode after Hurricane Sandy has passed, and the damage wasn’t nearly as bad it could have been.  I was listening to somebody who said something very wise, “the last storm that came through wiped out  a lot of the damaged trees, so weren’t as many weak trees to fall.”

There is an article in the paper today that shows the emergency preparedness folks with big  smiles because “they were prepared for the storm”…and they did good.  Now I know those folks work long and hard and train and drill…and they deserve our thanks and prayers.

BUT…I didn’t hear anybody thank God for the last storm.  And that got me thinking…do I thank God for the storms that He sent my way?  Don’t get me wrong…I didn’t want those storms….NONE of them.  BUT…God knew that I needed them…to get the bad junk out of my life.  So the “next” storm won’t wipe me out as bad.

Now why does God do that?  The answer is simple…He wants us to be doing things for HIM!!!  But with all of that junk in our life, we marginalize ourselves, disqualify ourselves, and sit on the sidelines…groveling in our past mistakes…instead of confronting them, repenting of them, and putting them in the past.

Seriously, can you imagine someone drowning in the pool, and you sitting there with a life saving ring.  But instead of throwing it, you say, well I don’t think I should because I have some dark secrets in my past….and if my name gets in the paper, they may find out about me.  Or last time somebody needed help, I failed…so I don’t think I will try this time.  So I think I’ll let them drown.  But I should run and hide so nobody seems me…

HOW STUPID IS THAT???  You would do everything in your power to act….so why do we act so timidly when people are all around us and and drowning in the world and on their way to an eternity or torment.  Because you blew it last time?

NO….just like that last storm knocked out power, flooded us, etc.  It told us that we need to cut down trees around power lines…and get our sump pumps working…and make preparations.  In other words….LEARN from past mistakes so that we can be more effective in the future!!!

2 Corinthians 13:5-9 – Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test? But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do not fail the test. Now we pray to God that you do no wrong; not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may appear unapproved. For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth. For we rejoice when we ourselves are weak but you are strong; this we also pray for, that you be made complete.

So test yourself to see if you have the stamina to trust God…and if not remember that last storm, and see the preparations you have made for the next one.  And think about this…if you never had a storm in the past…you would never be ready for one in the future. AND there is a BIG storm coming…it is Jesus’s return to the earth.  Because that is judgement.

And be encouraged.  We ARE weak.  We DO mess up.  We DO fail….but here is the GREAT thing that God tells us….

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – 9And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Now that is not JUST encouraging….that is COOL!  When we are weak we are strong!  And HE is perfected in our weakness.   Think about that for a lifetime….it will blow your mind!  And so will everything else that God does in our lives.  And He does it because He has work for us to do.

Now get out there and learn from the last storm, and prepare yourself for the next storm…cause “its a comin”!  Oh yeah…and get on your knees and PRAISE GOD FOR STORMS!

Grace and Peace, Dan

About Dan

My name is Dan. I grew up on the lovely Eastern Shore of Maryland...go Colonels! God really got a hold of me a few years back and asked me when I was going to "get in the game" and start living my life for Him. I have been burdened with the fact that many...many men in our world are wasting their lives while God wants them in the game. This is one of the ways that I am giving them that challenge...our nation, and our world depends on it. So thanks for your support...and your prayers. Dan
