It is so easy to compromise sometimes….actually all of the time. Because if you just say “this” or answer the question “that way”….it is mostly true. Which of course means that it is a lie.
God tossed a job opportunity my way, and it required me to answer a questionnaire about skills. And I realized that it is so easy not be honest. When I first answered the questions…I realized that I was really “rationalizing” my answers about some of them. Not that I couldn’t defend my position….with a few well placed “half-truths”…or known in heaven as lies….
But God woke me up this morning…and I am glad that He did…and He asked me if I was really honest about my answers. Nope…I wasn’t honest. I wasn’t lying…but I wasn’t honest. Isn’t that hilarious how we argue with ourselves. The analogy is like the frog in a pot of water. If you put him in boiling water….he will do everything in his power to get out, but put him in nice warm water and turn up the heat…he will just sit there until he is boiled….
That is how sin works in our life. Think about this…nobody will come up to you and say, “I know that you have never had a drink or done any drugs…but try some heroin”. You will run like crazy. But when they say, hey…it is only a cigarette, or marijuana…it is “almost” legal. And then all of the sudden…heroin isn’t that much of a stretch. And then Satan has you right where he wants you….contemplating. You see…Satan has no “new” tricks…he just perfects the same one over and over. Here is how the bible puts it…
Hebrews 12:1 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (NIV)
Be encouraged…we are all confronted with compromise….this is nothing new for men! And just to let you know…I have compromised…A LOT! But that doesn’t mean that we have to continue compromising. We ask that you enable us to break the yoke of compromise…and half-truths.
By the way…I did change my answers. Because I don’t want that yoke of compromise. If I don’t get the job…that means that God didn’t want me to have it. And…I am OKAY with that. And I pray that He continues to help me purify my heart…and clean my hands. Because I WANT to stand firm! Peter tells us that we are all works in progress…
1 Peter 5:9 – Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (NIV)
Be encouraged…it is worth following God. Here is the way that David puts it…
Psalm 34:8 – Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. (NIV)
Grace and Peace, Dan
