Sometimes when I ride down the road, I will see a memorial to someone in the form of a cross or flowers, and sometimes with a date on it. And of course we see that, we assume that is the site of an accident where that person died. And sometimes, I will see that memorial with R.I.P. written on it….meaning Rest In Peace. At face value…doesn’t that feel comforting to know that person is resting…
But that just shows our uncomfortableness with death, because it is so…final. Sadly, the truth is unless you die in Christ…there is no rest. It is really pretty simple, when we die…we will meet Jesus, and He will grant us our wish from life. If our wish is to have nothing to do with God, then He will grant that wish, and the bible tells us…
Matthew 25:30 – “Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (NASB)
That sentence (and many like it) tells me very clearly that THERE IS NO REST APART FROM GOD! Now this immediately makes people call God evil and cruel…but there could be nothing further from the truth. Because we are sinners, and by God’s definition, He can’t look on sin…He can’t tolerate sin! So to remedy that situation, He sent His Son to earth to die in our place….and IF WE WILL JUST ACCEPT THAT…then we will not need to hear that awful and horrible sentence.
God tells us over and over again…that He is a Good Father! He desires only the best for His children….please give Him a try…not like some fad, or some passing fancy…but put Him to the test to see if He won’t shower down His good on those who trust Him.
Psalm 34:8-10 – 8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!
10 The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. (ESV)
That sounds like a good and kind God to me. If you will just try Him at His word. By the way, God is NOT a vending machine. He is not a God who you can go up to in a time of emergency…and toss up a few words…and get a result. NO!!! He “may” do that…but He really desires that you walk WITH Him. And that way He can show you just how GOOD He is! Consider this…
Hebrews 4:7-13 – 7He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before,
“TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE,
DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS.”
8For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. 9So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. 11Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience. 12For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. (NASB)
Be encouraged….God not only provides rest…real rest…BUT…He provides rest while we are on earth. We can rest in Him. And Peace? There is NO peace apart from God. Do you ever notice that when Jesus shows up on the scene…He says, “Peace be with you….”. Well in this time of turmoil in the world (and there always is by the way)…consider this:
John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. (NASB)
Now that is peace….and that is rest. If you really want to Rest in Peace for eternity…and on this side of eternity as well…. I beg you…I implore you….I plead with you!!!! Accept Jesus right now…and He will give you peace. If you don’t know how to do that…send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. I will help you. It is very simple. Don’t harden you heart any more…accept Him today, and you WILL Rest in Peace!
Grace and Peace, Dan
