We underestimate God completely. It is amazing that we try to limit what He can do…and I have no idea why. Why don’t we ask Him to show us the amazing things that He can do for us instead? I know that He would love to “wow” us…so that we would desire to know Him better and follow Him more closely.
God gives us some amazing examples in the bible…one of them is with one of my favorite guys…Elijah the Tishbite. Here is the scene. Elijah has told God to keep rain from falling…and it will for 3 years. For any of you who lived through the drought of 2012, we freak out when it doesn’t rain for a month…these guys were going to be dealing with 3 years of no rain. So God tells Elijah to go away for a bit…and it is amazing how God takes care of Him.
1 Kings 17:4 – 3“Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4“It shall be that you will drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.” 5So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 6The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he would drink from the brook. 7It happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land. (NASB)
Now how cool is that. Room service from the Ravens. God commanded the Ravens to feed Elijah. But that only works because Elijah DID according to the word of the LORD. No labor…all he had to do was GO. And God took care of the rest. But don’t miss this…two things are going on here…
- Elijah had no other means of support, so he had to trust that God would send the ravens everyday.
- Elijah gets taught a lesson that God has complete control over everything….including the animals.
And consider this…God said, I have “commanded” the ravens to feed you. Not suggested, not asked….commanded. And He didn’t need to do it with yelling…He just said, this is your job…now just do it. Oh that we would be as obedient as the ravens!
So then the water supply is drying up because of no rain…and God says, okay Elijah, time to go…and this one to me is even more amazing…
1 Kings 17:8-12 – 8Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 9“Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there; behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” 10So he arose and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks; and he called to her and said, “Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.” 11As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.” 12But she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar; and behold, I am gathering a few sticks that I may go in and prepare for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.” (NASB)
Check out God’s style…He uses the most UNLIKELY circumstances in the world to get the job done. He doesn’t say, Elijah, go to the rich guy down the road, and stay in his beach house. NOPE…He says, go to a widow who has absolutely nothing to offer…she works for Me. AND…listen to the desperateness of her situation….I am going to make bread for me and my son and then eat it and die…
WOW….but read the rest of the story….Elijah says, “if you will do this”….”then God will make sure that you will NOT run out of flour until it rains.” IF…..IF….IF…THEN. That is how God works, and it happens just like Elijah says.
Well Christian…how could it be any other way? If God commanded it…there is no question that it will work exactly like He said. That is what FAITH is all about. God will take care of it….He HAS to! Because He commanded us to do whatever He commanded us to do….
So be encouraged…God has commanded that whatever He gives you to do will succeed…period. Whether He uses birds, widows, or whatever method He chooses. His will…will be done. Don’t forget that. Or if you have never thought about it…then…THINK ABOUT IT!!! God didn’t allow clever stories to be in bible just for good reading…He put them there for us to learn that He ALWAYS provides for us.
Remember yesterday? Hebrews 11:1- Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (NKJV)
