Everybody’s shot…get in and drive…

Day 304

Yesterday in a bible study, a friend of was relaying  a lesson that he learned in college, and gave me a great line, “I was on the edge of the rest of my life.”  Man that is good… In other words, he had a couple ways to go…he could learn from this lesson or curl up into a ball and feel sorry for himself…and that is the way that we all are ….ALL OF THE TIME.  Because we all are standing at the edge of the rest of our life.

Peggy Noonan, a writer for the WSJ wrote a great column in 2002 and used a metaphor from the movie “Black Hawk Down”.  Here it is…

“The movie, as you know, is about the Battle of the Bakara Market in Mogadishu, Somalia, in October 1993. In the scene, the actor Tom Sizemore, playing your basic tough-guy U.S. Army Ranger colonel, is in charge of a small convoy of humvees trying to make its way back to base under heavy gun and rocket fire. The colonel stops the convoy, takes in some wounded, tears a dead driver out of a driver’s seat, and barks at a bleeding sergeant who’s standing in shock nearby:

Colonel: Get into that truck and drive.
Sergeant: But I’m shot, Colonel.
Colonel: Everybody’s shot, get in and drive.”

We’ve all been shot.  We are all damaged goods….ALL OF US.  And Satan uses that to get us to just stand at the edge of our life instead of getting in to the battle.  Think about it, things like legalization of Marijuana happens because we are disqualified to speak up against it…because, “when I was in college”….  Pornography is a multi, multi-billion industry because so many feel marginalized to speak up against it, because they have viewed it…or been addicted to it…   Homosexuality is being pushed as the next civil rights movement because we aren’t brave enough to say that it is the thing that will drive our nation into  a downward spiral to implosion, and if you don’t think so read Romans 1:18-32.  Horrific magazines are on the grocery store shelves which are borderline pornographic, and our kids gawk at them because we don’t want to be viewed as a “prude”…because of our past history….or we don’t think it is that big of a deal…

WE’VE ALL BEEN SHOT….now get in and drive.  You are NOT marginalized because of past sins…if you have accepted Christ…you are FORGIVEN…and God wants you to get in and drive…..so that OTHERS might not suffer eternal torment, because you and I didn’t speak up because we are marginalized…..or “shot.”  Everybody should memorize a couple of verses….

James 3:2 – 2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. (NIV)

Romans 7:18-20 – 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. (NASB)

WE’VE ALL BEEN SHOT!!!  We have let people down, we have made mistakes, we have sinned, we have stumbled, we have beaten ourselves up about our silence, we have failed people….ALL OF US!  WE’VE ALL BEEN SHOT….NOW DRIVE!

By the way, that verse in Romans was written by the great and mighty Paul. The one that Satan knew was proclaiming the gospel!!!  Does Satan even care if you and I are awake?  Or are we busy “standing at the edge of the rest of our lives.”

Be encouraged…WE’VE ALL BEEN SHOT! You are not alone.  Satan will “try” to make you think that you are alone…that it is “just you.”  That “everybody else” has a wonderful family…and you have failed.  That everybody else has it all together….and you have failed.  That everybody else is a super Christian…and you are a horrible sinner. LIES…LIES….LIES….GET IN AND DRIVE!

I can’t remember where I got this line from….but I like it…maybe I came up with it.  “If we fail to act, then that thing that we don’t want to happen, is guaranteed to happen.”  Example, if you are driving down a road, and you know the bridge is out…because you saw the sign but the driver of the car “didn’t see it”, and you keep driving….you both will die.  You may not want to speak up, because you don’t want to upset that person….but if he/she continues down that path…they will die, and since you are in the car…you will die also. Isn’t that ridiculous?  Of COURSE you would speak up if a friend’s life was in danger…ESPECIALLY if the collateral damage would affect YOU!  Well look to the left and then to the right…because all of our lives are in danger unless we speak up!

Don’t let Satan’s lies disqualify you from speaking and acting.  God is depending on you to do it….to get in and drive!

So be encouraged…there is no super Christian.  We have ALL BEEN SHOT…and we ALL STUMBLE IN MANY WAYS….now get in and drive.

Grace and Peace, Dan

About Dan

My name is Dan. I grew up on the lovely Eastern Shore of Maryland...go Colonels! God really got a hold of me a few years back and asked me when I was going to "get in the game" and start living my life for Him. I have been burdened with the fact that many...many men in our world are wasting their lives while God wants them in the game. This is one of the ways that I am giving them that challenge...our nation, and our world depends on it. So thanks for your support...and your prayers. Dan

One Response to Everybody’s shot…get in and drive…

  1. Neider says:

Dan, as always, a great blog today!!! “Living on the edge of the rest of my life!” That is fantastic. That small phrase has so much meaning and can fit most of life’s situations. What you do in the next few seconds will impact the rest of your life. We tend to view life as a series of a few major decision points where we are on the “edge” and either step off or turn away. In reality, we have these major events, I would say, daily. Most of the time we don’t even realize we are on the edge of the rest of our life; we could be stuck by lightning when we walk out our front door. We could be hit by a car when crossing the street, on a metro train that runs into parked train, in a building that collapses during an earthquake, etc. We truly don’t know when we are on the edge of the rest of our lives.
What we do know is that life every event in life has an impact on how we deal with every other event in the future. We learn from the past. We don’t dwell on it, we learn from it, but we still are constantly standing “on the edge of the rest of our lives.” What we do today impacts the rest of our life. We don’t know when it will end so we need to be sure we are doing what we can to live the life to the fullest potential God has provided us.
