There is nothing that God hates more than pride. Now don’t confuse that with pride over a job well done…but pride….like it is something that you “did.”
Because in God’s economy…there is nothing that we did that He didn’t allow us to do. Our talents, our opportunities, our results are all a byproduct of what God allowed to happen in our life. You see we can’t really understand how some people live “long and productive” lives, and some people’s lives are cut short. That is because we look at life from our time frame and what we “think” should be a normal life span.
But you can read the obituaries….and they are littered with people who don’t live the standard life span. Consider for a moment, David Brainerd. Your initial comment might be, “who?” But David Brainerd, in a short 29 year life, inspired men like William Carey and Jim Elliot, who were missionaries in Africa and India. And his short life also played a role in the establishment of Princeton College and Dartmouth College. Ever heard of those? Well what did this guy do…get elected for president? Nope…he ministered to the Indians in Delaware and New Jersey. Successful? Well you tell me…
“He made a handful of converts, but became widely known in the 1800’s due to books about him.”
Oh yeah…and he had a great life. He suffered from Tuberculosis, severe depression…BUT….his short life was so impressive that a guy named Jonathan Edwards, one of the most powerful preachers in early American history wrote a biography about him.
And here may be the best quote about that I have ever read about a leader…
“Clyde Kilby summarized Brainerd’s influence as being based on the fact that, ‘in our timidity and our shoddy opportunism we are always stirred when a man appears on the horizon willing to stake his all on a conviction’.”
So be encouraged…if you are walking in God’s will….He is using you…and much more mightily than you can imagine. Because you are on His time line. But quite often…let’s be honest, it is lonely…very lonely…and we wonder where God is. In fact, Psalm 13 is perfect for those days…
Psalm 13 – How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, 4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall. 5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6 I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.
BUT…even more amazing than that are the struggles that she had. Go to her website, and read her Journal THREE entry on April 20th, 1998. I challenge ANY Christian to have written something so real, so genuine, and so honest about following Jesus. A short life? Maybe…but powerful…absolutely!
Grace and Peace, Dan
