I am increasingly perplexed at or consistent desire to build bigger barns. Now not necessarily in a farm sense…but in an accumulation sense. Whether it is our desire to have more beach houses, or more vacations, or whatever…..to churches who have one focus…get bigger. Why is that so? Is it for prestige, or pride, or just because we don’t ever think about it….
What I mean is that if you have beach houses, etc., you need to care for them. If you take more vacations, you have to pay for them. When I used to live in Hawaii, people would sometimes ask me where I was going on vacation. My response would always be….I live in Hawaii…where would I go?
But the same is true with churches…if you all you want is to get bigger, then when you build and build…and have more and more capacity…at some point in time, you have to fill those seats. That may not be a bad thing….BUT…it is if you have to “water down” your message so as not to offend people…especially the big givers. I love the Apostle Peter….because he gives us some great counsel…
2 Peter 3:10-13 – 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
11Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. (NASB)
IT ALL GETS BURNED UP!!! Isn’t that great….ALL OF IT! With intense heat, like “poof.” Gone, finito, history….don’t you love it.
So be encouraged friends, God tells us what we should do…you don’t have to guess! We ought to be people who are looking forward to that day, and looking forward to the new heaven and new earth. Here is exactly how to do it…
2 Peter 3: 14 – Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless (NASB)
