I grew up on a farm, and for that reason, I know a lot about seeds. In fact, I was in the barn on that farm, and there were some seeds lying on the floor from 20 or so years ago, and they were…well….seeds. I am sure they were wonderful seeds, and are very proud of themselves for being such lovely seeds…but they really haven’t done much…except remain as a seed. But what does Jesus say…
John 12:24 – “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (NASB)
Sadly, that is the same with Christians. I am saved, Amen…thank you Jesus! Now let me sit back down and remain a saved Christian….alone….never doing more than remaining a saved Christian.
Well…I mean I guess that is better than nothing. But what was a seed designed to do? GROW!!! But to do that…it has to die. It has to be put in to the ground…and grow.
Do you realize that they have found seeds from 2000 years ago that they have germinated…and guess what…they grew! Why? Because that is what seeds are supposed to do…grow!
What is the big deal Dan? The big deal is that Christians are supposed to GROW! But to do that they have to die to self…and to the world. They have to allow God to plant them….so that they can grow.
Back to the seed…can you imagine a grain of wheat sitting there for many years, quite proud of himself for being such a wonderful seed, and then all of the sudden being put in this dark and moist ground…an then he gets all squishy feeling, and develops a tail, and then something starts growing from him…and all of the sudden he is a host for a plant that now has 50 wheat seeds who will die and then fall back to the ground to grow 50 seeds themselves…and pretty soon you have a field of wheat from that one seed.
And that wheat field is far more glorious and productive than that seed ever was just sitting there….and that field can now feed the birds, and people, and produce more and more seed….get the picture. Because back to that verse…look at the context….
John 12:23-26 – 23And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25“He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26“If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. (NASB)
So be encouraged….you might be a fine looking seed, or a fine “looking” Christian…but if you will allow yourself to die to the lure of the world, you will finally be what God intended you to be!
Grace and Peace, Dan
