We have been duped into thinking that when we say yes to God, and decide to follow Him that everything is rosy and fun and happy. Nothing could be further from the truth…
In fact, most of the time, the opposite happens…initially. Moses is a great example. Through God’s protection He is adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, and let’s face it, he had the best education, training and lifestyle that could be imagined in that day. But at the same time, his nursemaid was his own mother…amazing story.
And then, something inside of Moses says, that I am an Israelite, and I need to take action. So he kills an Egyptian who is mistreating some Israelites…in fact it is better than that. Here is how Moses did it…
Exodus 2:11-14 – 11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?”
14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.” (NIV)
Did Moses become a hero? Nope…a fugitive. Because Moses was trying to do it “his” way. He looks around and sees the coast is clear, and kills an Egyptian. God aren’t you proud? Israelites…behold you new leader?
Nope…get out of town Moses…for FORTY YEARS! He must have been thinking…this stinks. And then he sees a burning bush…but the bush didn’t burn up…it just kept burning. God says, Moses, I have something for you to do.
Fast forward…Moses, the great leader says, “you must be looking for someone else”…not me…I can’t speak well…etc., etc. And when he was out of excuses, he goes to Pharaoh. Pharaoh, let my people go (you have seen the movie)…and Pharaoh says, “no”…and a matter of fact, I am going to make “your people’s” lives miserable….because YOU want to take them away.
Hero? Nope…they hate Moses. Fast forward, God does a bunch of miracles through Moses, and most of them are against only the Egyptians, when the Israelites are untouched…and this passage is amazing…
Exodus 11:3 – (The Lord made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded in Egypt by Pharaoh’s officials and by the people.) (NIV)
What? The Egyptians highly regarded Moses? Moses a rock star? Let’s face it….if you speak for God…people listen. If God puts His hand on you…people will know it…BUT…only if you do it for GOD’s glory…and not your own. But it was dark there for a while….and Moses was hating life….but that was while God was preparing everything…
So be encouraged…if you are earnestly seeking God and it is bleak? Sickness, loss of job, financial pressure, etc. Be encouraged that God is working a bunch of stuff out that you just can’t see yet. And when He does deliver you? Make sure that you tell everybody that God did it….
Grace and Peace, Dan
