We are Bored!
I have been blessed with the opportunity to mentor a lot of men during my life after God kicked me out of the nest. And you know what the number one issue is with any man who is alive today? He seeks satisfaction and significance….and the book of the Bible that ALL men should read to explore this is the book of Ecclesiastes. It is the quintessential authority on the worthlessness of the things that we chase after.
Ecclesiastes 1:1-3 – The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: 2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” 3 What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?
And the book goes on and on about the boredom of life….”without God.” Because you see there is no satisfaction when you aren’t in a personal relationship with the one who created you. We chase what the “world” has to offer…. but unfortunately the things that we chase: money, sex, drugs, or rock and roll give us nothing but heartache and disappointment. Admit it men….We are THE most materialistic people in the world. And the result of all of that chasing?
We are bored. We are surrounded by so much opulent wealth that we are absolutely bored to tears. Nothing is fun or exciting anymore?!?! But we chase it….boy do we chase it! If I can just get the next job, or promotion, or hookup, or car, or house, or club membership….you name it…we will chase it. I got this from someone else (I am not smart enough to come up with it myself), and I can’t remember who…but consider this quote: “It is not sad when we tire of pain…but it is a tragedy when we tire of pleasure.” Wow…that is pretty heavy.
The book of Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon, who was David’s son. He had more than anyone who has ever lived. He was given more wisdom, talent, money, power, and control by the Lord than anyone ever recorded. He was the smartest guy alive…so what does the smartest guy alive do? Well he chases it all…in the pursuit of satisfaction. You read the book…you will not regret it. And what does he say?
Ecclesiastes 5:10 – Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.
But the cool thing about the book is that at the end of it….he makes a bold proclamation. After all of that chasing…and I am sure he was tired, because he had 300 wives and a thousand concubines…you make the connection. Here is what he says…
The Conclusion of the Matter
Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 – 9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. 10 The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.
13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.
Men…the conclusion of life is this; Without God front and center in your life…without you doing what he “designed” you to do….if you sit in the nest…you will be bored to tears!!! BUT….if you will spread those wings of yours…and tell the Lord that you are tired of sitting around, and are ready to fly…you will never regret it. He and He alone is the source of meaning, satisfaction, and significance! Put Him to the test…and see if he won’t deliver you in a way that will blow your mind.
And the result? Well…you will be blessed, your life will be fulfilling, your family will be blessed, everyone that God puts in your path will be blessed, and your life won’t be wasted!! And when the Lord meets you when you breathe your last breath….you will hear these amazing words…
Matthew 25:23 – “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
Now that is satisfaction!!! May the Lord bless you and encourage you to Fly! Dan
